We were taking a few days to drive from Brussels to Brittany and just happened to have chosen a time when the 75th anniversary of the DDay invasion was being held & most everyplace that we contacted to stay at were fully booked. As luck would have it, we found a listing for the l'Hotel de Hercé in Mayenne and upon calling the number were happily surprised to find; that as it turned out, it was our very good fortune in many ways, to find that we had called on the only night for which they had an available room. As they were booked from the next night forward with celebrants of the anniversary. Matthew & Vanessa could not have been more welcoming & gracious hosts, their hospitality combined with their incredible early 18th century home made our all too brief stay truly memorable. More than a hotel, it was as if we were welcomed into the home of old friends who were happy to share their knowledge of the area, their love of its history. The dedication they had to making sure that our stay & subsequent travels were the best they could be. We would recommend a stay at l'Hotel de Hercé to anyone that wishes to experience a truly memorable experience . Welook forward to a future visit to be able to see the work that Matthew and Vanessa have been able to do on restoring this remarkable home.

We wanted to treat to ourselves to a quiet small-city retreat, and found the perfect answer at L'Hotel de Hercé. This lovely manor home is on a beautiful tree-lined street, in a residential neighborhood, just a short stroll from boulangeries, a gentile park, as well as the main plaza and old chateau of Mayenne. All of which was great fun to explore. Though you are in-town, our room was off the street and offered large windows overlooking the home's very private courtyard. Our the bed in the spacious Giverny Chambre was very comfortable and fitted with crisp linens. The ensuite bath had good water pressure (yes, that matters to us). Vanessa and Matthew were gracious hosts who made us feel more than welcomed. They put out a lovely breakfast in the beautiful dining room, with it's soaring ceilings and tall windows. Everything about our stay was all just right!

I stayed with Matt and Vanessa over Christmas and had a fantastic time staying in their beautifully restored home in Mayenne, we had many interesting; rich with history, walking tours around many beautiful sites near Mayenne and felt it was a true French stay. I would highly recommend staying here for anyone with an interest in history and authentic French culture, or just looking to hide away in the French countryside. SA

My wife and I recently stayed here and were amazed at, not just the outstanding hospitality from Matthew and Vanessa, but the building itself, with its rich history, both old and new, the layout and design as well as its location within the town. You could easily spend a good week there and barely scratch the surface. The town of Mayenne is very picturesque and historical. Would highly recommend this place.

My family and I had a lovely stay with Vanessa and Matt. The Mansion is equal parts stunning and charming with many secrets in its long history. The hospitality shown was excellent with great conversation, wine and cheese. This is a great place to base out of and explore the region, or simply enjoy French village life by walking to numerous cafe's and restaurants then relaxing for a few hours reading in the garden. Thankyou for a fantastic and thoroughly enjoyable visit!

This fascinating historical property is being sympathetically, tastefully, and imaginatively renovated by two inspired and enthusiastic Australians to provide sumptuous accommodation in a lovely part of France.
